Burlington, VT – Residents across much of Vermont and portions of northern New York are being urged to prepare for strong, gusty winds tonight as a Wind Advisory goes into effect, according to the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the Wind Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday, with west winds sustained at 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching up to 50 mph. The strongest winds are expected between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, when impacts may be most noticeable.
The advisory covers much of Vermont and parts of northern New York, including areas near Burlington, Plattsburgh, Saranac Lake, Montpelier, Middlebury, Rutland, St. Johnsbury, and surrounding communities. Some locations, particularly higher terrain and exposed areas, may experience stronger gusts.
Forecasters warn that strong winds could lead to scattered power outages, especially where tree limbs or weakened trees are blown down. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, trash cans, and lightweight furniture that could become airborne in gusty conditions.
Drivers should also be prepared for difficult travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and SUVs. Sudden crosswinds may be strongest on open roadways, bridges, and mountain passes.
A High Wind Warning is also in effect for portions of southern Vermont, including Bennington and Windham counties, where wind gusts may be even stronger overnight.
Winds are expected to gradually ease after sunrise Saturday, though breezy conditions may linger into the morning hours.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, charge devices ahead of time in case of outages, and use caution if traveling overnight.
