Burlington, VT – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening for parts of Vermont and northern New York, as gusty winds and low humidity heighten the risk of wildfires, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Burlington.
The warning covers the Champlain Valley, Northeast Kingdom, and Central Vermont, as well as St. Lawrence County, New York. Forecasters said winds from the south at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 to 45 mph, will combine with humidity as low as 28 to 35 percent to create dangerous fire conditions through the evening hours.
Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s before sunset, then gradually cool into the 60s. Officials warn that any fires that start could spread rapidly and be difficult to control due to the dry air and strong winds.
In Vermont, a statewide debris burn ban remains in effect, prohibiting open burning of yard or brush debris. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor flames, secure loose materials, and report any signs of smoke immediately to local authorities.
The NWS expects winds to weaken later tonight as humidity levels rise, easing fire danger overnight.
