Vermont greets the morning wrapped in fog and bitter air, the kind that burns lungs with every breath. Streetlights glow through mist in Burlington as winter tightens its grip, and worse cold waits just ahead.

A Cold Weather Advisory is posted for Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon across Burlington and much of northern and central Vermont. At the same time, an Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect for the broader region, signaling potentially dangerous conditions. Wind chills may plunge between 20 and 40 degrees below zero, especially late Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Snow showers arrive tonight and continue through Saturday. Blowing snow reduces visibility at times, particularly along open stretches of Route 7 and I-89. Accumulations remain light to moderate, but rapidly falling temperatures create a flash-freeze risk. Wet pavement may turn icy within minutes after sunset.

Saturday turns harsh. Highs struggle to reach the low teens, while gusty northwest winds drive wind chills near −15 to −30 degrees. Exposed skin faces frostbite in as little as 10 minutes during peak cold. Outdoor plans should be limited, and frequent warm-up breaks are essential.

Sunday stays cold despite some sunshine. Highs hover near 4 degrees, and wind chills remain dangerous through midday. By Monday, the pattern begins to shift. Skies brighten, winds relax, and temperatures slowly rebound into the teens.

Looking ahead, signs of moderation grow stronger. Midweek highs climb into the 20s, with late-week readings approaching near 30 degrees. Snow chances return by Wednesday, but a broader warming trend may follow deeper into next week.

For now, winter remains in control. Dress in layers, keep pets indoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. How low did wind chills dip where you are today?
