Vermont – The cold already bites at exposed skin, but what’s coming will feel far harsher. Wind sweeps across frozen ground, sharpening the chill and signaling the arrival of dangerously cold Arctic air across northern Vermont.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Wind chills are expected to plunge between 20 and 40 degrees below zero, with the coldest values likely across northern New York and much of Vermont. In the Adirondacks, wind chills could briefly dip even lower.

In Burlington, temperatures fall rapidly Friday night as northwest winds strengthen. Actual air temperatures may drop below zero, but the wind will make it feel far colder. Frostbite on exposed skin could occur in as little as 10 minutes during the coldest periods.

Saturday remains bitterly cold despite some sunshine. Highs struggle to reach the single digits, and brisk winds keep wind chills well below zero through the afternoon. Outdoor activities become dangerous without proper protection, and even short trips outside require layers, hats, gloves, and face coverings.

Travel concerns grow as well. Vehicles may struggle to start, and any lingering moisture on roads could freeze solid. Drivers along I-89 and local roads should be prepared for slick patches, especially early Saturday.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, bring pets inside, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Anyone working outside should take frequent breaks in warm shelters and watch closely for signs of hypothermia.

Cold conditions ease slightly Saturday night, but temperatures remain well below normal into early next week. Light snow chances return Sunday night and Monday, adding to winter travel concerns as the cold persists.
