Burlington, Vermont – Roads across northern New York and Vermont could turn slick by late evening, with snow developing after 8 p.m. and intensifying overnight into early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Monday, with 3 to 6 inches of snow expected across the Adirondacks and much of Vermont, especially along and east of the Green Mountains.
The most impactful window begins around 1 a.m. Sunday, when steady snowfall could reduce visibility and quickly coat roads from Lake Placid and Saranac Lake to Montpelier, Stowe, and White River Junction. Key routes including I-87, I-89, and I-91 may become snow-covered, particularly through mid-morning Sunday.
Some mixing with rain is possible during the day Sunday, which may limit additional accumulation but create slushy and uneven road conditions. By Sunday night into early Monday, temperatures drop again, raising concerns for refreezing and black ice just ahead of the morning commute.
Communities including Malone, Newport, Rutland, and Springfield should prepare for reduced visibility and slower travel times. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and check conditions through 511 services before heading out.
Snow tapers early Monday, but hazardous travel may linger into the morning commute, with additional updates possible if conditions worsen.
