Vermont – A quiet, crisp morning across the Champlain Valley may feel calm, but powerful winds are building just behind the scenes. By late tonight, strong gusts could rattle homes, sway trees, and complicate travel across northern Vermont and nearby New York.

Temperatures hover near 23°F early this morning in Burlington, with calm conditions under partly cloudy skies. The quiet pattern will not last long. Clouds increase through the day, and a wintry mix could briefly develop during the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Wind Advisory begins at 11 p.m. and continues until 8 p.m. Monday for much of northern Vermont and portions of northern New York.

South winds will strengthen to 20–30 mph, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph at times. The strongest gusts are expected across open areas near Lake Champlain, higher terrain, and exposed highways.

Drivers on Interstate 89, Interstate 87, and Route 7 may encounter sudden crosswinds, especially near bridges and open farmland. High-profile vehicles like box trucks and campers should use extra caution.

Loose outdoor items may be blown around, and tree limbs could snap in the strongest gusts. Localized power outages are possible if branches fall onto lines.

Rain showers move into the region Monday as temperatures surge to around 62°F, briefly delivering a burst of spring warmth. However, colder air quickly returns by Monday night.

By Tuesday, temperatures fall sharply with snow showers possible and highs near 32°F, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations across Burlington and surrounding communities.

Conditions calm slightly by midweek with sunshine returning Wednesday, though temperatures remain chilly.

Meteorologists say another warming trend could build late next week as early signs of spring return across the Northeast.
