Burlington, Vermont – Drivers across northern Vermont could face slick and hazardous roads within hours Friday morning as accumulating snow moves into the region, threatening to disrupt travel through the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. through 11 p.m. Friday, with widespread snowfall totals between 2 and 5 inches expected across central, northern, and northeastern Vermont, along with parts of northern New York.

In Vermont, the advisory includes Burlington, Montpelier, Stowe, and St. Johnsbury, where steady snowfall will develop during the morning and continue through the day. Roads across Interstate 89, Route 7, and Route 100 could become snow-covered quickly, especially during heavier bursts in the afternoon.

Northern New York communities such as Massena, Malone, and Lake Placid are also expected to see similar snowfall totals, creating regional travel slowdowns. The timing is especially concerning for the late-day commute, when reduced visibility and untreated roads may combine to create dangerous driving conditions.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check real-time road conditions through state 511 systems before heading out. Even minor snow totals can create significant impacts this time of year as daytime melting refreezes on untreated surfaces.

The advisory remains in effect through Friday night, and additional updates or extended alerts are possible if snowfall rates increase or linger into early Saturday.
