Burlington, VT – A rare Extreme Heat Warning will take effect across much of northern Vermont and northeastern New York starting 11 a.m. Monday, with dangerously high heat index values expected to reach 105–107°F, making conditions potentially life-threatening for vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Heat Advisory is already in place for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Essex County, NY and Addison County, VT. That advisory escalates to a full Extreme Heat Warning on Monday through 8 p.m. Tuesday, affecting cities including Plattsburgh, Burlington, Middlebury, and Ticonderoga.
Heat-related illnesses will become increasingly likely during this prolonged heat event. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, hydrate frequently, and avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. Roads, sidewalks, and vehicles will reach dangerous temperatures rapidly, posing additional risks to children and pets.
Local officials across Grand Isle, Chittenden, and Franklin counties are preparing cooling centers and encouraging wellness checks, particularly for elderly residents and those without reliable access to air conditioning.
The extreme heat is expected to ease after Tuesday evening, but additional advisories may be issued if humidity remains high later in the week.
