Burlington, VT – Residents across Vermont and northern New York should prepare for the coldest temperatures of the season this weekend, with frost and freeze conditions expected Saturday night into Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread frost and freezing temperatures are likely for much of Vermont and northern New York, except within a few miles of Lake Champlain. Low temperatures are forecast to drop into the low to mid-30s in many areas by early Sunday, September 21.
Forecasters advise residents to take protective action for tender vegetation, including bringing plants indoors or covering them overnight. “Colder temperatures early Sunday morning than this morning for many,” the NWS warned in its latest update.
A frost advisory and freeze warnings cover much of the region. Temperatures are expected to be lowest in northern and eastern Vermont, where readings could dip into the upper 20s in some higher elevation valleys. By comparison, parts of eastern Vermont may only drop into the upper 30s to low 40s Sunday night into Monday, offering a brief reprieve.
This weekend marks a notable seasonal shift for the region, signaling the end of the growing season in many areas.
