Montpelier, Vermont – A chilly start to the week could damage gardens and outdoor plants as freezing temperatures settle across much of central and southern Vermont overnight Sunday into early Monday. A Frost Advisory is in effect from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, with lows expected to drop near or below 32°F.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the advisory includes areas such as Montpelier, Barre, Middlebury, Rutland, and Springfield. The cold snap comes just one day after Mother’s Day, a time many residents begin planting. Officials warn that frost could harm or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.

Counties under the advisory include Orange, Windsor, Rutland, Washington, Addison, and Bennington. Gardeners are advised to bring potted plants indoors and cover in-ground crops with fabric or plastic sheeting.

The frost threat arrives at the start of the growing season for central Vermont, but areas in northeastern Vermont and the Adirondacks won’t reach their average start until May 21. Residents in the affected zone should prepare now to avoid setbacks to early planting efforts.

Frost Advisories may be reissued if cold conditions persist. Stay updated with local alerts through Monday morning.
