Burlington, VT – Vermont is under a very high fire danger alert Friday, with officials warning residents to avoid open burning as conditions make it easy for flames to spread.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, several towns have issued burn bans and are urging residents to check with local fire departments before lighting any fire. The Vermont Emergency Management agency confirmed Friday that the fire danger forecast is set to very high across all regions of the state.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Special Weather Statement for September 19, 2025, citing low relative humidity and gusty northerly winds. Combined with very dry ground conditions, the weather raises the likelihood that any fire could grow rapidly and be difficult to contain.

Emergency officials are advising residents to avoid outdoor burning, campfires, or activities that may spark flames. The public is also asked to remain cautious with vehicles, grills, and equipment that could ignite dry grass or brush.

State forestry officials stressed that even small fires could become dangerous under these conditions, and that anyone considering outdoor fire activity should first confirm restrictions with their local fire department.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation, and updates will be shared as conditions change.
