Burlington, Vt. – Fog and slick spots could slow Tuesday’s early commute across Vermont, especially on I-89 near Burlington, as temperatures drop overnight. Drivers should use caution before sunrise with visibility reduced in valleys and near Lake Champlain.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, overnight lows will fall to the low 50s under mostly clear skies. Winds will remain light, but patchy fog could develop after midnight. By late morning, sunshine and calmer weather return with highs near 80 degrees.

The pattern stays steady through midweek, offering unseasonably warm afternoons in the Champlain Valley. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s with mostly sunny skies. Nights stay comfortable in the low to mid-50s. Those attending outdoor events or working outside should stay hydrated, as temperatures run several degrees above average for mid-September.

Northbound and southbound travelers on I-89 may also notice heavier fog patches around Waterbury and Montpelier during early morning hours. State officials urge drivers to allow extra time, use low beams, and watch for sudden drops in visibility.

By Friday, cooler air begins pushing into northern Vermont, dropping highs back into the upper 60s. Overnight lows could dip into the low 40s in rural valleys by the weekend.

A stretch of clear skies should last into early Sunday, but a shift in wind direction could bring cloudier afternoons by late weekend. More updates are expected as the week unfolds.
