Burlington, VT – Northern Vermont is gearing up for snow this Thanksgiving week, with accumulations expected to complicate travel plans on Sunday and Wednesday. Higher elevations may see up to 12 inches of snow, potentially impacting I-89 and surrounding routes.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur above 1,500 feet in central and northern Vermont. Mountaintops could accumulate 6-12 inches, while valleys will likely remain clear due to temperatures hovering above freezing. Travelers are urged to prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility in snow-prone areas.

Sunday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with gusty northwest winds, reaching speeds of 28 mph. Highs will be near 40 degrees, keeping snow confined to higher elevations. Monday offers a brief reprieve with sunny skies and a high of 41 degrees. However, rain and snow showers return Tuesday night into Wednesday, coinciding with peak holiday travel times.

Lower elevations, including Burlington, should expect minimal snow accumulation but remain prepared for cold and wet conditions throughout the week. Highs will fluctuate between the low 30s and mid-40s, with overnight lows dipping below freezing.

Holiday travelers should monitor weather updates, especially those planning trips through mountain passes or regions along I-89. Keep an emergency kit handy, allow extra travel time, and avoid driving during active snowstorms if possible.
