Burlington, VT — A sharp drop in temperatures is expected across Vermont and northern New York this weekend as the region settles into a spell of much below normal temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington. The cold stretch begins Friday night and persists through early next week, bringing a taste of mid-winter conditions to the North Country.
High temperatures Saturday and Sunday are forecast to top out only in the upper teens to mid-20s in many northern and mountain communities, with overnight lows plunging into the single digits and low teens. Some of the higher elevations—such as Mount Mansfield and Mount Marcy—may see temperatures dip below zero at times, especially Sunday morning.
Alongside the cold, periodic mountain snow showers are expected through the weekend. While accumulations will be light and localized, the combination of snow showers and cold temperatures could lead to slick spots on untreated roads, particularly in higher terrain.
Despite the wintry chill, the pattern will not last indefinitely. Forecast guidance indicates a warming trend beginning in the middle of next week, with highs gradually rebounding into the 30s and even low 40s by Wednesday and Thursday. This shift will bring temperatures closer to seasonal norms for mid-December.
Residents should prepare for the cold spell by dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors during early morning hours, and staying alert for localized slippery travel in the mountains. The NWS will continue to update the forecast as conditions evolve heading into next week.
