Burlington, VT – A surge of Arctic air following Thanksgiving is expected to collide with deepening moisture across Vermont, setting the stage for heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions from November 28–30. The setup could bring one of the first significant snowfalls of the season, particularly across the northern and central Green Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service office in Burlington, a moderate risk of heavy snow has been issued for northern New England late this week. Snow will likely develop early Friday and persist into Saturday morning, with totals of 5–10 inches possible in the Green Mountains and 3–6 inches in lower valleys. Wind gusts of 25–35 mph may create blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility for those traveling or shopping on Black Friday.

According to the Vermont Agency of Transportation, snow-covered and icy stretches are likely along I-89, U.S. 7, and Route 2 through the central part of the state. Travelers are urged to delay non-essential trips, keep extra blankets and water in vehicles, and allow ample stopping distance in snow squalls.

Cold air will tighten its grip through the weekend, with daytime highs barely reaching the 20s in the north and lows dipping into the teens. By Sunday, skies may clear but wind chills will remain below zero in mountain towns.
