Wolcott, VT – A kayaking trip turned fatal Saturday afternoon after a woman was found unresponsive in the Lamoille River, prompting a multi-agency emergency response in Lamoille County.
According to the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department, a 911 call came in around 1:39 p.m. reporting an individual floating face down near Flat Iron Road in Wolcott. Deputies, along with crews from Wolcott Fire, Elmore Fire, Hardwick Rescue, and the Johnson Fire Department Water Rescue Team, responded and recovered the victim from the river.
Authorities identified the woman as a 34-year-old from Morrisville. She had been kayaking at the time of the incident. Emergency crews transported her to Copley Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Officials have not released additional details on what led to the emergency but confirmed that multiple agencies assisted in the coordinated response.
Residents are reminded to use caution on area waterways this time of year, as cold water and changing river conditions can quickly become dangerous. More information may be released as the investigation continues.
