Rutland, Vermont – Evening travel across western Vermont could quickly turn slick tonight as freezing rain and sleet develop, raising concerns for icy roads ahead of the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. Friday for parts of western Vermont and the eastern Adirondacks of New York. Impacted communities include Rutland, Middlebury, Vergennes, Bristol, Ripton, Fair Haven, Killington, and Lake Placid.

The storm is expected to bring up to 0.1 inches of ice along with snow and sleet accumulations near 2 inches. Precipitation will likely begin as freezing rain or sleet this evening, coating untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots before transitioning to periods of light snow overnight.

Slick travel may develop along U.S. Route 7 between Rutland and Middlebury, Route 4 near Killington, and mountain routes crossing the western slopes of the Green Mountains.

Transportation officials urge drivers to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, especially on bridges and secondary roads where ice can form quickly. Travelers can check the latest road conditions at newengland511.org in Vermont or 511ny.org in New York.

Icy conditions may persist through the Friday morning commute, with gradual improvement expected later in the morning as precipitation tapers.
