VENTURA, Calif. — Drivers heading through the Northern Ventura County Mountains are facing winter-like conditions today as a rare mid-October snow event blankets higher elevations. Up to 3 inches of accumulation are possible by mid-afternoon, creating slick and hazardous driving conditions along mountain passes and rural roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. PDT Today. Snow levels have dropped near 6,000 feet, affecting routes such as State Route 33 north of Ojai and portions of the Los Padres National Forest. Forecasters warn that sudden visibility reductions and icy patches could make travel treacherous, especially on shaded or winding stretches.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use caution, and check the latest road conditions before traveling. Chains are not expected to be required, but motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing weather through the afternoon.
The advisory expires by early evening, but lingering cold air could keep some higher elevations icy overnight. Further updates may follow if additional snowfall develops later this week.
