Vandalia, IL – The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will host public candlelight tours on Saturday, Dec. 13, inviting visitors to celebrate the season inside Illinois’ oldest surviving state capitol.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the free event runs 5–7 p.m. and includes more than 150 candles illuminating the 1830s-era building. The first 100 visitors will receive a free holiday ornament, and the site will accept non-perishable or canned food donations for the local pantry.

Decorations throughout the building will reflect 19th-century holiday traditions, offering guests a glimpse into how Illinois’ early lawmakers might have celebrated the season.

The Vandalia Statehouse, located at 315 W. Gallatin St., served as the state capitol from 1836 to 1839 before the government moved to Springfield. Regular visiting hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For more details, visitors can call 618-283-1161 or visit the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website.
