Glasgow, Montana – Freezing rain late tonight through Christmas Day may create icy roads across northeast Montana, prompting travel caution.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service office in Glasgow, freezing rain is expected to develop late tonight and continue into Christmas Day, with ice accumulations forecast primarily northwest of Jordan, Wolf Point, and Plentywood.
The agency reports that parts of Phillips and Valley counties could see up to one-tenth of an inch of ice or more, with localized totals possibly reaching 0.15 inches. Even light ice accumulation can significantly reduce road traction, increasing the risk of accidents.
A graphic shared by the National Weather Service indicates the most likely icing window begins around 11 p.m. tonight and continues through Christmas Day. Areas highlighted include portions of northern Phillips County, central Valley County, and nearby rural highways.
Officials are urging drivers to take precautions if travel is necessary. The National Weather Service advises motorists to reduce speed, allow extra distance between vehicles, and remain alert for changing road conditions as temperatures hover near freezing.
Road conditions in the affected areas may become slick quickly, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Slippery conditions could impact early morning holiday travel and Christmas Day plans for residents and visitors alike.
The National Weather Service emphasized that even small ice amounts can create dangerous driving conditions, especially overnight and during the early morning hours when visibility may also be reduced.
Commuters, holiday travelers, and early-shift workers are encouraged to monitor local road reports and weather updates before heading out.
Additional updates may be issued if conditions change.
