VALDEZ, Alaska – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Thompson Pass from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. AKST Thursday, with up to 9 inches of new snow and gusty winds to 40 mph expected to create blowing snow and whiteout conditions at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, conditions will deteriorate overnight as a strong front moves through the Prince William Sound region, intensifying snowfall and wind by daybreak Thursday. “Visibilities could drop to one-half mile or less at times,” forecasters said, warning that both the morning and evening commutes could be affected.

Peak impacts are expected Thursday morning through early afternoon when winds and snow rates will be highest. By late afternoon, snowfall is forecast to taper, though blowing snow will likely continue to limit visibility across the summit and approaches to Valdez.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and check 511.alaska.gov for updated road reports before traveling. Alaska DOT crews will be plowing and sanding through the day, but travel across the pass may remain challenging through Thursday evening.

Residents and travelers should also take precautions for icy steps, sidewalks, and driveways, as temperatures remain below freezing.
