Salt Lake City, UT – Travelers heading into Utah’s high country this week should prepare for winter driving conditions as snow and strong winds develop across multiple mountain regions beginning Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Southern Mountains, including Brian Head and Alton, from 5 a.m. Wednesday through 11 p.m. Thursday for elevations above 8,500 feet. Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected, with locally up to 15 inches near Brian Head. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

A second advisory covers the Western Uinta Mountains, including Moon Lake and the Mirror Lake Highway, from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 11 p.m. Thursday for elevations above 9,000 feet. Snow totals in this area are also forecast to reach 6 to 12 inches, accompanied by gusty winds up to 55 mph.

Forecasters say the combination of snow and wind could make winter driving conditions likely, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Higher elevation routes such as SR-148, SR-14, SR-143, and the Mirror Lake Highway are expected to see the most significant impacts.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions in mountain terrain. Those traveling for the holidays should allow extra time and consider adjusting plans if conditions worsen.
