Salt Lake City, UT – A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect late tonight as a strong storm system brings heavy mountain snow across the Southern Mountains of Utah, threatening difficult travel conditions through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the advisory runs from 11 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday, with snow totals ranging from 6 to 12 inches above 9,000 feet and 2 to 6 inches between 7,500 and 9,000 feet. Areas including Alton, Brian Head, and surrounding high terrain are expected to see the most accumulation.

Forecasters say snow levels will begin unusually high—near 9,500 to 10,000 feet Saturday night—before rapidly dropping to 7,500 to 8,000 feet by Sunday afternoon. In heavier bands of precipitation, snow levels may fall as low as 6,500 to 7,000 feet through Monday morning, expanding the potential for slick and icy roads in mid-elevation areas.

According to the NWS, the most significant travel issues are expected on mountain routes above 9,500 feet tonight, spreading to areas above 8,000 feet by Sunday afternoon. Travelers heading toward ski resorts, high-elevation towns, and backcountry access points should prepare for winter driving conditions, including reduced visibility and snow-covered roads.

Drivers are urged to slow down and check updated road conditions through the Utah Department of Transportation at udottraffic.utah.gov. The Weather Service also recommends monitoring graphical snowfall forecasts and storm timing information at weather.gov/slc/winter.
