St. George, UT – Residents in southwestern Utah should prepare for strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon, with forecasters warning of hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, storms are expected to develop across the region this afternoon and evening, posing risks of localized flooding and property damage. A “marginal risk” level has been issued, meaning isolated severe weather is possible.

The impacts could include small hail, sudden downpours leading to flash flooding in low-lying areas, and strong wind gusts capable of knocking down branches or unsecured outdoor items. The advisory specifically urges residents to tie down trampolines, patio furniture, and other objects that could become airborne.

Motorists are advised to use caution, as heavy rain may reduce visibility and cause slick conditions on highways, including I-15 through Washington County. The NWS also reminds residents that lightning strikes can be deadly, urging people to seek shelter at the first sound of thunder.

The storm threat is expected to continue into the evening before conditions gradually improve overnight.
