Salt Lake City, UT – Utah has experienced a windy 24 hours with the highest gusts reported in the Salt Lake Valley. Dry microbursts produced these strong winds yesterday afternoon and evening, with notable gusts of 69 mph in Taylorsville, 67 mph in Riverton, and 59 mph at the Salt Lake City Airport.
According to the US National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah, the dry microbursts were responsible for these wind speeds. These microbursts occur when precipitation falls from a high cloud base into a layer of very dry air below. The evaporation cools the air rapidly, causing the dense cold air to accelerate downward. When this air hits the ground, it spreads out horizontally, creating brief but strong gusty winds.
The forecast for Utah shows a trend of mostly sunny skies with high temperatures continuing throughout the week. Today, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 97°F with mostly cloudy conditions. Monday will see a high of 92°F with sunny skies, and Tuesday’s forecast predicts a high of 93°F with similar sunny weather. The middle of the week will remain hot with Wednesday reaching up to 97°F and Thursday peaking at 99°F. Friday will also be hot, with a high of 97°F and partly cloudy skies.
