Utah – Snowflakes swirl through downtown Salt Lake City this morning, clinging to windshields and softening road lines as Winter tightens its grip. Wet pavement and falling temperatures are already creating slick spots across the valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from early morning through late evening. Valley floors can expect a trace to 2 inches of snow, while benches and the Wasatch Back may see 2 to 6 inches. Snow showers increase through the morning commute, then continue on and off through the day.
Travel impacts are most likely along I-15, I-80, and surface roads near the benches. Bridges and overpasses may ice quickly as temperatures hover in the mid-30s, then fall sharply tonight. Areas south and southeast of the Great Salt Lake could pick up additional snow due to lake enhancement, briefly reducing visibility.
By tonight, skies begin to clear, but cold air settles in fast. Lows dip into the low 20s, allowing slush to refreeze. This is prime flash-freeze territory, especially where snow melts during daylight hours. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance after sunset.
Friday brings a break in snowfall and more sunshine, though temperatures stay subdued. Highs reach the mid-30s, keeping shaded areas icy. To be fair, the calmer pattern helps crews clear roads ahead of the weekend.
The weekend turns quieter and brighter. Saturday stays sunny and cold, while Sunday warms slightly, nearing 40 degrees. Dry weather continues into early next week with gradual moderation, though overnight freezes remain common.
Winter Weather Advisories may be updated if lake-effect snow lingers longer than expected. How are road conditions where you’re traveling this morning?
