Salt Lake City, Utah – Rain-darkened pavement and mist are covering parts of northern Utah this morning, with thunderstorms still possible through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, Salt Lake City has a 90% precipitation chance today. Showers remain possible through 3 p.m., with thunderstorms possible after that.
Salt Lake City International Airport reported rain and mist with 64 degrees at 8:35 a.m. Visibility had fallen to four miles.
That combination could slow traffic on I-15, I-80 and other busy Wasatch Front routes. Give vehicles extra stopping distance on wet pavement.
The high reaches about 80 degrees, keeping snow and freezing weather completely out of the picture.
The Weather Prediction Center also highlights a level 2-of-5 severe thunderstorm risk across parts of the Great Basin today. The local outlook does not specify a tornado probability for Salt Lake City.
Storm chances remain elevated this evening. The NWS places precipitation chances at 90%, decreasing to 60% as the period progresses.
Sunday brings partial improvement. Salt Lake City reaches 80 degrees with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon.
Monday turns warmer at 83 degrees. Another 30% chance of afternoon storms develops, increasing to 40% before midnight.
Tuesday provides the clearest break in this unsettled stretch. Sunshine returns with a high near 85 degrees.
However, the dry window may not last. A slight thunderstorm chance develops before midnight Tuesday.
Wednesday brings another chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Temperatures settle near 83 degrees.
Drivers should watch for rapidly changing visibility beneath heavier showers. Never drive through water covering a roadway.
