Salt Lake City, UT – Drivers across Utah are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, bringing sudden whiteouts and rapidly slick roads just as early holiday travel begins to increase. The bursts may affect travel from Salt Lake City to Ogden, Provo, Logan, and across major mountain passes along I-15, I-80, and US-89.

Snow squalls typically last less than an hour but are considered one of winter’s most dangerous travel hazards. Sudden whiteouts paired with flash freezing can instantly make highways slick, contributing to multi-vehicle crashes in past events along the Wasatch Front and Utah’s canyon routes. Officials stress that avoiding the road during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest option. Meteorologists often caution: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”

If a squall hits while you’re driving, experts recommend slowing down gradually, turning on hazard lights, and greatly increasing following distance. Drivers should stay in their lane, avoid sudden braking, and never stop in a travel lane where visibility may drop near zero. Safe pull-off locations—rest areas, exits, or parking lots—are the best places to wait until the burst passes.

Utah residents heading out for errands, school pickups, ski traffic, or early holiday shopping should keep winter emergency kits in their vehicles, including blankets, water, chargers, scrapers, and traction materials like sand or cat litter. Homeowners should secure outdoor items in case strong wind gusts accompany the squalls.

Forecasters will continue monitoring conditions throughout the afternoon, with additional alerts possible.
