UTAH — Cloud cover hangs low over the Wasatch Front this morning, the sky heavy with early December chill as light snow and rain chances return to northern Utah by midweek. The first true winter tease of the season is shaping up across Salt Lake City, with scattered flakes possible late today and a more organized system expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City expect temperatures to hover near freezing early Tuesday, climbing only into the low 40s during the day before dipping back below 30°F Tuesday night. That drop could trigger a mix of rain and snow, particularly during the evening commute and again near dawn Wednesday. Accumulations look light — generally less than half an inch — but slick roads and icy bridges may develop where snow briefly sticks and refreezes.
Drivers along I-15 and I-80 should be alert for wet pavement that could turn icy through canyons and higher valley routes. Meteorologists say most precipitation will taper by late Wednesday morning, giving way to drier, colder air through Thursday.
“Even light snow this early in December can catch drivers off guard,” the weather service said. “Plan extra travel time and watch for black ice in shaded areas.”
The remainder of the week looks calm, with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s and mostly sunny skies returning. Another weak system may brush the Wasatch Range Friday into Saturday, bringing a 20% chance of light snow showers.
