Utah – Headlights reflect off damp pavement across the Wasatch Front this morning as clouds thicken and light rain develops. The air feels mild for December, but the steady moisture signals a changing pattern that could complicate travel at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, rain chances increase through the day and become more widespread by evening. Highs reach the mid-50s, keeping precipitation liquid in the valley. Roads along I-15, I-80, and surface streets may turn slick, especially during heavier bursts after sunset.

Rain continues into Saturday, with periods of steady precipitation expected through the morning and afternoon. While valley snow is not expected, snow levels remain high enough that mountain routes could see accumulating snow. Travelers heading toward Parleys Canyon, Big Cottonwood, or Little Cottonwood should prepare for changing conditions and reduced visibility.

Sunday stays unsettled. Rain lingers through much of the day, with cooler air slowly filtering in by night. Temperatures dip into the upper 40s, increasing the chance of patchy fog and slick spots during evening travel. Wet roads combined with holiday traffic could slow travel across the metro.

By early next week, showers become more scattered. Monday still carries a rain chance, mainly during the first half of the day, before conditions gradually improve. While no winter storm warnings are in place for the valley, meteorologists continue tracking the system’s evolution as Christmas travel ramps up.

Looking ahead, Christmas week leans milder than normal, but additional rain systems remain possible. Mountain snow could impact ski traffic and mountain passes, even if Salt Lake City stays rain-dominated.

Plan extra time if traveling this weekend, slow down on wet roads, and keep headlights on during rain. Are you driving into the mountains or staying in the valley? Share what conditions look like where you are.
