Salt Lake City, Utah – Salt Lake City braces for rising temperatures Sunday as triple-digit heat looms just ahead, kicking off a prolonged heatwave across northern Utah.

According to the National Weather Service, highs will reach near 96°F on Sunday, July 13, with light winds offering little relief. Conditions intensify by Monday, topping 97°F, and peak on Tuesday with a dangerous 100°F expected. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during the afternoon and stay hydrated.

Roads like I-15 and US-89 will bake under intense sun, making vehicle breakdowns more likely. Travelers should check coolant levels and avoid leaving pets or children in parked cars. Power demand will rise sharply as air conditioners strain against the heat — Utah utilities recommend shifting energy use to early morning or late evening hours.

By Monday night, lows will only drop to the low 70s, offering minimal overnight relief. Partly cloudy skies return by Tuesday night, keeping conditions muggy through midweek.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain elevated:

  • Wednesday: Sunny, near 97°F
  • Thursday: High near 98°F, mostly clear
  • Friday: Heat persists, near 98°F again

No rain is expected during this stretch, and wildfire risk remains elevated. This marks the most intense heatwave since early June, signaling a critical mid-summer stretch for northern Utah.

A summer weather alert remains in effect. Residents should monitor updates from the NWS and prepare for excessive heat through Thursday, July 17.
