Salt Lake City, UT – Residents across southeastern Utah are being urged to take cover this evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect for Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties until 6:15 p.m. MDT, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

At 5:13 p.m. MDT, radar detected a strong thunderstorm approximately 23 miles north of Lake Powell, moving east at 30 mph. The storm is capable of producing hail up to two inches in diameter and damaging winds approaching 50 mph, forecasters said.

According to the NWS, residents in the path of the storm — including parts of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell — should seek shelter indoors immediately. The storm’s hazards could cause damage to roofs, windows, siding, and vehicles, and pose risks to people or animals outdoors.

Officials also warn of torrential rainfall capable of producing flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and slot canyons. Motorists are advised not to drive through flooded roadways.

The warning covers portions of southeastern Garfield County, northeastern Kane County, and central San Juan County. Additional alerts may be issued if the storm intensifies or tracks toward populated areas.
