St. George, Utah – Thunderstorms moving across southern Utah Friday and Saturday could trigger dangerous flash flooding in canyons, dry washes, and areas near recent burn scars. The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a moderate flood risk, warning that the heaviest rainfall is most likely Friday afternoon through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy downpours from afternoon and evening storms may overwhelm drainage areas in Washington, Kane, Garfield, and San Juan counties. Slot canyons and popular hiking routes in Zion National Park are among the areas most at risk. Officials caution that even a brief period of intense rain can quickly produce life-threatening flooding conditions.

Travelers and hikers are urged to monitor conditions closely, avoid narrow canyons, and never attempt to drive across flooded roads. Emergency management officials stress the importance of turning around rather than risking swift water. Campers should also move to higher ground if heavy rain develops nearby.

The threat is expected to ease late Saturday night, though more storms may return early next week.
