Salt Lake City, Utah – A blast of unusually cold May weather is sweeping across Utah this weekend, bringing up to 15 inches of mountain snow and a widespread freeze threat to valley communities through Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, snow will begin late Saturday night above 8,000 feet, with the heaviest accumulation expected Sunday morning. Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour in areas like Logan Summit, the Cottonwoods, and I-70 summits near Salina and Clear Creek. Some seasonal routes, including SR-148 near Cedar Breaks, could see slick or snow-covered roads.

Behind the storm, valley temperatures are expected to dip to or below 32°F on both Sunday and Monday nights, prompting a minor freeze risk across central and northern valleys. These freezing temperatures could damage or kill sensitive crops and garden plants in cities such as Provo, Richfield, and Cedar City.

Drivers heading into the mountains should prepare for winter-like road conditions and carry a survival kit. Valley residents are urged to cover vulnerable vegetation and monitor local updates.

Snow and freeze alerts remain in effect through Monday night, with additional advisories possible if temperatures drop further.
