Kanab, Utah – Thick wildfire smoke is expected to blanket southeastern Utah through at least Saturday night, bringing hazardous air and visibility concerns across Lake Powell, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Capitol Reef.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, dense near-surface smoke from Arizona’s Dragon Bravo and White Sage wildfires will reduce visibility to less than 2 miles at times, especially along major routes near Hanksville, Bullfrog, and Kanab. Air quality levels may drop to unhealthy for sensitive groups or even very unhealthy in areas like Glen Canyon and eastern Grand Staircase.

Communities in the San Rafael Swell, Escalante, and Torrey should limit outdoor activity—especially children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues. On Lake Powell, boaters should prepare for sharply reduced visibility and consider delaying trips until conditions improve.

If you’re driving through the region, check UDOT’s road weather page for real-time visibility and traffic alerts. The smoke threat will likely persist through Saturday night, with more advisories possible if fires in Arizona intensify.
