Salt Lake City, Utah – Wind gusts up to 30 mph and humidity as low as 11% are creating extreme fire conditions across the Salt Lake Desert, prompting a Red Flag Warning through 9 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, Fire Weather Zone 478 is under critical fire weather conditions as southerly winds strengthen between 15 and 25 mph. The dry, breezy environment significantly increases the potential for rapid wildfire spread.
The warning affects areas west of the Wasatch Front, where dry fuels and elevated wind speeds could cause any ignition source—like campfires or sparks from equipment—to rapidly escalate into a large wildfire. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks, including welding and off-road driving.
Drivers along I-80 and remote desert roads should remain alert for sudden fire flare-ups and reduced visibility due to smoke. Officials also recommend charging phones and preparing go-bags in case evacuation orders are issued.
Conditions are expected to improve overnight, but additional warnings are possible if wind patterns continue.
