Salt Lake City, Utah – Dangerous fire conditions will return to Utah’s deserts on Wednesday as strong winds and low humidity combine to create a high wildfire risk. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. for the Salt Lake Desert and Central Utah’s West Desert.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, south winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph, especially south of Interstate 80 and west of Tooele. Relative humidity is expected to fall as low as 10 to 15 percent, creating conditions where even small sparks could lead to fast-moving wildfires.
Officials warn that any new fire starts or existing fires could spread rapidly under these conditions. Fire crews across Tooele County and the West Desert region are preparing for potential flare-ups, and residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks, such as welding, outdoor burning, or driving over dry grass.
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with additional alerts possible if dry and windy weather lingers into late week.
