Tooele, Utah – Drivers along I-80 north of the Oquirrh, Stansbury and Cedar Mountains could face wind gusts over 70 mph late tonight, creating dangerous crosswinds through 5 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday for the Great Salt Lake Desert and Mountains and the Tooele and Rush Valleys. Sustained south winds of 30 to 40 mph will gust up to 60 mph, with localized downslope winds exceeding 70 mph in areas north of the mountain ranges.

The strongest winds are expected late this evening into early Tuesday morning behind a cold front. Travel along I-80 near Wendover, Dugway and Tooele may become hazardous, especially for semis, RVs and vehicles towing trailers. Blowing debris could also create sudden hazards on open stretches of highway.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, including trash bins and patio furniture, and prepare for isolated power outages. Drivers should reduce speed and maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel. Winds will gradually ease after sunrise Tuesday, but gusty conditions may linger through the morning commute.
