Salt Lake City, Utah – Temperatures are set to spike fast enough to strain daily routines across Utah, with highs climbing up to 30 degrees above normal by Wednesday afternoon and pushing toward record-breaking levels through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a strong high-pressure ridge will drive unusually intense spring heat across Utah and southwest Wyoming, with conditions more typical of early June than mid-March. Afternoon highs are expected to surge into the 70s and 80s statewide, with some lower elevations approaching 90°F by Friday.

The rapid warmup will impact major population centers including Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and St. George, where consecutive days of elevated temperatures could increase dehydration risks and early-season heat stress. Urban corridors along I-15 will see the most consistent warming, especially during peak afternoon hours between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on vulnerable individuals, including seniors and those without reliable cooling. Snowmelt may also accelerate in higher elevations, increasing runoff into streams and rivers.

This early-season heat surge is expected to hold through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible if records begin to fall statewide.
