Salt Lake City, Utah – Flash flooding threatens outdoor activities across central and southern Utah as monsoon moisture surges into the region Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), southwest Utah and areas with recent burn scars in central Utah face the highest risks. Slot canyons, normally dry washes, and backcountry roads could rapidly flood, creating hazardous conditions.

In Kane and Garfield counties, popular hiking destinations like Zion National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are particularly vulnerable. Authorities strongly urge hikers and campers to monitor weather updates closely and consider postponing outdoor excursions.

“Even minor flooding can quickly escalate, especially in slot canyons,” NWS forecasters cautioned. Emergency management officials advise visitors to immediately seek higher ground at the first sign of rising water and never attempt to cross flooded roadways or trails.

Flash flooding risks are expected to persist throughout Friday evening, with conditions gradually improving overnight. Additional advisories may follow if monsoon moisture continues.

Stay tuned for updated weather alerts and exercise extreme caution when traveling or exploring outdoors in these vulnerable regions.
