Wayne County, UT – Hikers and travelers in eastern Wayne County face dangerous conditions this morning as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Salt Lake City extended a Flash Flood Warning until 11:15 a.m. Friday.

According to the NWS, Doppler radar detected strong thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall in the area as of 10:14 a.m. Between half an inch and nearly one inch of rain has already fallen, with flash flooding either ongoing or expected to begin soon.

Forecasters warned of “life-threatening flash flooding” in several popular slot canyons, including Blue John, Little John, Angel Cove, Robbers Roost, Hells Hole, and Lost Spring canyons. These narrow canyon systems are particularly prone to dangerous flooding, which can rise suddenly and sweep away anyone inside.

The NWS urged visitors to stay out of canyons, washes, and low-lying areas, even if skies appear clear overhead. Floodwaters can travel from distant storms and turn dry washes into raging torrents within minutes. Riverbanks and culverts may also become unstable.

Officials say the flash flood threat is “considerable,” and anyone in eastern Wayne County should remain alert to rapidly changing conditions.

This warning follows a period of late-summer storms across Utah, where slot canyon rescues have been reported in past years during similar events. Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to monitor alerts and avoid backcountry areas until conditions improve.
