ST. GEORGE, Utah – Southern Utah faces a heightened flash flood risk Sunday as monsoon storms threaten to dump heavy rain on already vulnerable landscapes, including slot canyons, dry washes, and recent burn scars. Thunderstorms are expected to develop by midday if cloud cover breaks, raising the chance for sudden, dangerous flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the flash flood risk will linger across much of Utah and into southwest Wyoming through Thursday as deep monsoon moisture continues. Officials warn that storms producing heavy rainfall may cause rapid water rises, particularly in southern Utah’s popular outdoor recreation areas.

Communities from St. George to Moab should prepare for road washouts and dangerous travel conditions in low-lying areas. Zion National Park visitors are urged to avoid hiking in slot canyons, where even distant storms can trigger life-threatening floods. Drivers are reminded never to cross flooded roads and to use alternate routes if water is present.

The flash flood threat is expected to remain elevated until midweek, with additional watches possible if storms persist. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay weather-aware and have backup plans for outdoor activities.
