St. George, Utah – Strong winds and dangerously low humidity could spark fast-moving wildfires across southern Utah Monday afternoon, prompting a Fire Weather Watch for several high-risk zones including the San Rafael Swell and Grand Staircase.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the watch is in effect from 12 p.m. to midnight Monday for Fire Zones 489, 494–498. Southwest winds are expected to blow 10–20 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph. Relative humidity may plunge to 4%, with overnight recovery remaining poor into Tuesday.
The affected regions include the Henry Mountains, Mojave Desert, and Color Country’s West Desert and mountain areas—known for dry fuels and remote terrain. Officials warn that any ignition could lead to rapid wildfire spread, especially under these critical conditions.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and postpone activities that could spark fires. Fire crews are on alert, but containment could be difficult in isolated areas.
This marks the first Fire Weather Watch of the season for much of southern Utah. More advisories or full Red Flag Warnings may be issued as conditions evolve.
