Salt Lake City, Utah – Dangerous fire weather conditions are developing across central and southern Utah, with gusty winds and bone-dry air creating a critical wildfire risk through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, southwest winds of 30–35 mph combined with extremely low humidity—between 5–8%—will significantly elevate fire danger across much of the state. The most impacted areas include Washington, Iron, Kane, and Sanpete counties, where conditions will be especially volatile Wednesday and Thursday.
Officials warn that even minor sparks from campfires, vehicles, or machinery could rapidly ignite fires in these tinder-dry zones. “Avoid any activity that produces sparks,” the NWS advised. Residents and visitors are urged to check local fire restrictions, secure trailer chains, and avoid using equipment that could emit embers or flames.
These conditions are typical of Utah’s late-summer fire season but are being intensified by persistent drought and prolonged heat. The National Interagency Fire Center currently lists several Utah zones under heightened fire watch.
Critical fire weather warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening, and additional alerts may be issued if winds strengthen.
