Salt Lake City, Utah – Gusty southwest winds and dangerously low humidity are expected to create critical fire weather conditions across southern and western Utah this afternoon and evening, heightening wildfire risk from St. George to Delta.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, winds could gust up to 35 mph, combining with relative humidity as low as 7% to produce dangerous fire-starting conditions. The warning primarily impacts Washington, Iron, Millard, and Beaver counties, with the highest risk expected between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The warning comes as dry air funnels into the region ahead of an upper-level trough. These conditions, paired with hot afternoon temperatures, make any spark—whether from campfires, power tools, or vehicles—potentially hazardous. The NWS urges residents to avoid open flames, secure trailer chains, and delay yard work involving metal tools.
In Cedar City, local officials said fire crews are on heightened alert, especially near foothills and canyon areas. Parts of I-15 through southern Utah may also experience reduced visibility due to blowing dust or smoke.
The fire weather alert remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with possible extensions if dry and windy conditions persist.
