Kanarraville, Utah – Residents across southern Utah felt light shaking Saturday morning after two small earthquakes struck within minutes of each other near the Iron County community of Kanarraville, roughly 40 miles north of the Nevada border.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake registered a magnitude 3.0 about 12 kilometers east of Kanarraville, occurring just before 7 a.m. local time. A second magnitude 3.0 quake followed shortly after, centered about 3 kilometers south-southeast of town. Both events were reviewed automatically by seismic monitoring systems.
The earthquakes were shallow, increasing the chance they were felt despite their modest strength. Light shaking was reported in parts of Iron County, including Kanarraville and nearby Cedar City. Some residents as far south as the Utah–Nevada line reported brief rumbles, though no damage or injuries were reported.
USGS data shows several smaller seismic events in the area over recent weeks, suggesting ongoing minor fault movement rather than a single isolated incident. Emergency managers have not issued any alerts, and critical infrastructure remains unaffected.
Officials remind residents that small aftershocks are possible and encourage those who felt the shaking to submit reports to the USGS to help refine impact data. Authorities say no further action is needed at this time, but monitoring will continue through the day.
