Provo Canyon, UT – A 9th grade student died Wednesday after suffering a fatal injury during a school field trip at South Fork Park in Utah County, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the student was critically injured from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot while attending the trip with classmates. Deputies and medical personnel responded to the scene, and the student was flown to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, no other students or staff were hurt during the incident. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances, but the name of the student has not been released.
The Alpine School District has made counseling services available for students and staff affected by the tragedy. Officials noted that resources will remain in place as long as needed to support the school community.
“We appreciate the partnership and cooperation with all our community partners as we investigate this tragic incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its statement.
The case remains under active investigation.
