Utah County, Utah – A traffic stop in the Orem area led to the seizure of 702 grams of illegal drugs and felony distribution charges, authorities said.

According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy conducted a traffic stop Feb. 25 for a traffic violation while patrolling in Orem. During a search of the vehicle, deputies reportedly located 249 grams of heroin and 453 grams of methamphetamine.

Based on deputy training and experience, officials said a typical dose of heroin or methamphetamine is approximately 0.1 grams. Authorities estimate the seized heroin equates to roughly 2,490 doses and the methamphetamine to approximately 4,530 doses — amounts deputies say far exceed what an individual user would normally possess.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Jesus Gonzalez-Melendez. He was booked into the Utah County Jail on two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, according to jail records.

Additional charges include possession of drug paraphernalia, never obtaining a driver’s license, and a license plate violation.

Records show Gonzalez-Melendez is from Mexico and was allegedly in the United States unlawfully. Authorities also stated he had previously been deported in December 2025.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Young drivers and commuters in the Orem area may notice increased patrol activity following the arrest.
