Grand Junction, Colo. – Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to keep parts of western Colorado under a flash flood threat through Friday, with the strongest impacts targeting canyons, burn scar areas, and dry washes. The National Weather Service in Grand Junction warned storms could deliver hail, gusty winds, and frequent lightning, with flooding concerns lasting into Friday evening.
According to the NWS, moisture-rich storms will move across northwest, southwest, and west-central Colorado as well as portions of northeast Utah. Localized flash flooding remains possible Friday, particularly near steep terrain, slot canyons, and wildfire burn scars where debris flows may quickly develop.
Cities most at risk include Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Montrose, and Durango, where brief but intense rainfall may overwhelm drainage systems and cause road hazards. The Colorado Department of Transportation urged drivers to avoid low-lying routes and be prepared for sudden closures.
Conditions should begin to dry out Saturday, with temperatures returning to seasonal highs in the mid to upper 80s by Sunday. More stable weather is expected to hold into early next week, reducing the flood threat.
