Fort Wayne, IN – The National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana warns of an extended stretch of snowy and frigid weather through early next week, with 1–3 inches of snow possible from Thursday through Friday and dangerously cold wind chills this weekend.

Rain early Wednesday morning will transition to all snow as temperatures fall into the 30s. A lake effect snow setup will develop tonight through Thursday morning, dropping 1–2 inches across northern Indiana. By Thursday evening, another quick-moving system is expected to bring an additional 1–3 inches of snow, especially south of U.S. Highway 30.

Friday will remain cloudy and cold, with highs only in the low 20s and intermittent snow showers. But the bigger story comes this weekend as an Arctic air mass settles in. Overnight lows Saturday and Sunday will plunge into the single digits and below zero, with wind chills ranging from -10° to -20° at times.

“Extreme cold will dominate the weekend,” forecasters said. “Even brief exposure could cause frostbite on exposed skin.”

Motorists should prepare for slick and snow-covered roads through Thursday night and exercise caution, particularly during lake effect bursts near LaPorte, South Bend, and Fort Wayne.

Residents are advised to bundle up, limit time outdoors, and ensure pets and vulnerable individuals have adequate shelter.
